When I was just starting out working in radio – one of the first community leaders to embrace me and guide me was Bilal Qayuum, co-founder of the Father’s Day Rally Committee. For 24 years Bilal has been working in neighborhoods and changing the lives of young men through mentoring and advocacy. A father, a grandfather, a great grandfather – Bilal always carries himself with style and grace but with the weight of his wisdom – he’s made a difference in the lives of thousands.
Every year Bilal hosts a Father’s Day Rally Picnic and over the past four years he’s brought together African American and Latino men in an annual Jackie Robinson/Roberto Clemente Softball game. Although the Robinson’s generally get slaughtered – it’s been a great way to get two communities with so much in common together. Here’s a short video I put together at last June’s event.
